Association football, more commonly known as football or soccer, is a team sport played between two teams of eleven players using a spherical ball. It is widely considered to be the most popular sport in the world.

The game is played on a rectangular grass or artificial turf field, with a goal in the centre of each of the short ends. The object of the game is to score by driving the ball into the opposing goal. In general play, the goalkeepers are the only players allowed to use their hands or arms to propel the ball; the rest of the team usually use their feet to kick the ball into position, occasionally using their torso or head to intercept a ball in midair. The team that scores the most goals by the end of the match wins. If the score is tied at the end of the game, either a draw is declared or the game goes into extra time and/or a penalty shootout, depending on the format of the competition.

The modern game was codified in England following the formation of The Football Association, whose 1863 Laws of the Game created the foundations for the way the sport is played today. Football is governed internationally by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (International Federation of Association Football), commonly known by the acronym FIFA. The most prestigious international football competition is the FIFA World Cup, held every four years.

What is the difference in popularity of football/soccer in Europe and North America for girls?
Q. Because at home in Canada my school (only 600-700 students) can field 2 full lady soccer/football teams and in the summer my town (4000 people) can field at least one full girls team in each age level. But I came to Europe for a year and joined a team for a couple of months and we only had about 8-9 girls. I'm just curious...

A. For girls, it's clearly more popular in North America than in Europe. In Europe,(and indeed all around the world) the guys are crazy about football (soccer) it's the main attraction, the BIG game, whilst in North America its just a minority's sport, way behind basketball, football (american), hockey or baseball. I guess its considered kind of "girls sport" there in NorthAmerica, while all across Europe is clearly more of a "man's game", girls don't really play football, and few or no attention is paid to women's football. 100.000 people can go and see a CL game, or a big clash between 2 great clubs, or their national team playing the World Cup or the Euro Cup, just like the Superbowl in the U.S, but very very few people would attend a… [cont.]

A. luv, I'm from and in Brazil, and trust me Football itself does not affect the muscular system, unless you got some injuries. What affects the muscles is the training outside the field. Like if you work out using weights, or inside a pool, things like that. We have the most expensive players of the planet, and some of them like to work out, others hate it, they just like to party and play, some of those are the best in the field, who knows. It's all about injuries, like you mess your knees not because of the playing, but because some retard defense hit it, or you step your feet in some hole at a bad field. So first you have to figure out what kind of training the player does. Ronaldo never work out with weights in Brazil, when he went… [cont.]
