R is the eighteenth letter of the modern Latin alphabet. Its name in English (pronounced /ɑr/) is spelled ar; its name in Hiberno-English is or (/ɔr/).

History

Egyptian hieroglyph tp Proto-Semitic R Phoenician R Etruscan R Greek Rho Later Etruscan R

The original Semitic letter was probably inspired by an Egyptian hieroglyph for "head", pronounced t-p in Egyptian, but it was used for /r/ by Semites because in their language, the word for "head" was Rêš (also the name of the letter). It developed into Greek Ρ ῥῶ (Rhô) and Latin R. It is likely that some Etruscan and Western Greek forms of the letter added the extra stroke to distinguish it from a later form of the letter P.

Minuscule

The minuscule (lower-case) form of r developed through several variations on the capital form. In handwriting it was common not to close the bottom of the loop but continue into the leg, saving an extra pen stroke. The loop-leg stroke shortened into the simple arc used today.

Another minuscule, r rotunda, kept the loop-leg stroke but dropped the vertical stroke. It fell out of use around the 18th century. You can see some on this page in historic types.

If my r/c helicopter can only fly up to 15ft off the ground, will it work in a 3rd floor apt?
Q. My r/c helicopter can only fly 15ft up so will in work in a 3rd floor apt that is 30ft off the ground? why or why not?
Asked by ajromero50lp - Fri Dec 14 23:42:52 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's not your actual elevation above sea level, it's has to do with the helicopters height above ground. It is something called ground effect. Kind of complicated to understand without drawing. Your compressing more air further off the ground (poor wording by me but it's getting near bedtime). When airplanes are landing they always encounter "ground effect". This happens at an altitude approximately equal to the wingspan. If you fly your helicopter off a third floor balcony you may have a prob. However, it should fly the same in the penthouse as it will on the sidewalk.

How do I write a algebraic equation that incorporates r, h, and d?
Q. A figure shows that a person standing h feet above sea level can see d miles to the horizon. The distance r is the radius of the Earth. Although the Earth is not perfectly spherical, many scientists consider the value r = 3963 miles to be a reasonable approximation. Write an algebraic equation that incorporates r, h, and d.

A. Hard to describe here, but, you get a right triangle of the following: r + h, d and r r + h is the hypotenuse, r is the vertical leg and d is the horizontal leg. So you'd generally have a + b = c In this case you have: r + d = ( r + h ) hth
