A board game is a game in which counters or pieces are placed, removed, or moved on a premarked surface or "board" according to a set of rules. Games may be based on pure strategy, chance or a mixture of the two and usually have a goal which a player aims to achieve. Early board games represented a battle between two armies and most current board games are still based on beating opposing players in terms of counters, winning position or accrual of points (often expressed as in-game currency).

There are many different types and styles of board games. Their representation of a real life situation can range from having no inherent theme, such as Checkers, to having a specific theme and narrative, such as Cluedo. Rules range from the very simple, such as in Tic-tac-toe, to ones which describe a game universe in great detail, such as in Dungeons & Dragons, although most of these are Role-playing games and the board is secondary to the game, serving to visualize the scenario. The length of time it takes to learn to play or master a game can vary greatly from game to game. Learning time does not necessarily correlate with the amount or complexity of rules; some games, such as chess and Go, have simple rules that can still lead to complex scenarios.

What are the names of some zero-luck based board games?
Q. I had a huge argument with some of my friends earlier today which resulted in a permanent ban of any luck based board games. As a result, we are left to play only games such as Chess, Checkers, or Stratego in which there is no roll of the die, flip of the coin, or drawing of the card. The problem is that all three of those games are two player games and I have four friends. Does anyone know of any games that can be played with four or more people and has zero luck involved? Also, I am referring to strategy games, not games such as trivia.

A. Technically, all games have some luck element. That is, all games have an element of unpredictability (even chess). What you are looking for is games with a mininmum of random elements. Here are two: Caylus and Puerto Rico. Both are published by Rio Grande Games. Both can be played by two to five players. Oh, and Winning Moves makes a four-player Stratego game called Ultimate Stratego.

How can I convince my family to play board games with me?
Q. My family is very friendly with each other but for some reason they consider board games like Monopoly stupid and a waste of time. But I really love board games and I really want them to play with me. How can I convince them to play with me?

A. One reason that people hate to play Monopoly is that they think it takes too long to play. House rules can make the game go on forever. Agree that there will be no money on Free Parking and that players can not borrow money from each other. Less money = shorter game = happier family. Another approach is guilt. It works very well on parents. Simply mention that you won't be little forever and that now is a good time to spend some time with you and a good board game. Family game night is possible, even in today's hectic world. If all else fails, make some friends. I was shy as a child but still managed to find friends and spend countless hours playing board games.
