An original Humpty toy made to appear in the UK BBC childrens programme ‘Play School’ made in the 1960’s has been sold in an auction for £6,250/$10500. The toy was one of several made for the TV show, which ran for more than 20’s from the mid-1960s. Other toy characters from the show included Big Ted, Little Ted and Rag Doll Jemima.

Unsurprisingly the 53cm high toy was based on the nursery rhyme character Humpty Dumpty and first appeared on UK TV screens (3 channels) in 1964 and appeared in nearly all programmes.

The famous auction house valued the doll to only fetch around £1200/$2000 when first appraised. A private bidder bought Humpty the large egg-shaped soft toy who has checked trousers and is dark green.

Although they believe around 20 dolls were made in total during the period, this is understood to be the first time a authentic Humpty appeared on the market.

The large egg-shaped soft toy, which is dark green with checked trousers, was sold to a private bidder.

It is thought as many as 20 were made during the time the show ran, but it is believed to have been the first time an original Humpty has come on to the market.

Nursery rhyme character Humpty Dumpty has featured in many books, songs and films including Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland sequel, Through the Looking Glass, and more recently Puss in Boots.
